Editor’s Comment: Winter is coming!

Welcome to the latest edition of Footwear Today. And first thing’s first… where has 2024 gone?! It feels like it’s absolutely flown by!

And our Great British weather doesn’t help either; we had a pretty non-existent Summer with a lot of wet weather earlier in the year, and so far we’ve had quite a mild Autumn. It’s no wonder people don’t know what to wear from one week to the next!

The impact of this on the footwear sector is crucial; retailers need to know what to order and what to stock, and while consumers have been delaying their Winter purchases it’s throwing all the normal seasonal patterns off course.

We are now into the so-called ‘golden quarter’ as we hurtle towards the all-important Christmas period. And although October sales were a bit flat, just as the clocks went back and the evenings got darker, it seems as though the weather finally turned and people suddenly acknowledged that Winter is almost here.

It’s been a year of anniversaries across the footwear industry in 2024, and in this issue we’ve got interviews with two big brands both celebrating important milestones this year.

Kids brand Young Soles marks its 10th anniversary and Founder, Louise Shill, tells us about how the brand continues to disrupt the market with some of the coolest children’s footwear styles.

And equally, boasting its own quirky sense of style for the past 30 years, ART’s Global Sales Director, Jorge Hernandez, talks about the brand’s heritage and protecting its individuality still to this day.

You can read both these interviews, plus reviews on the Summer footwear shows and much more, in this issue. Enjoy!
